STAY ALIVE / FIRST AID / BLEEDINGp.1/3

SEVERE BLEEDING — DIRECT PRESSURE

  1. Expose the wound. Remove or cut away clothing.
  2. Press firmly with a clean cloth or gloved hand.
  3. Hold continuous pressure 10 minutes — do not lift to check.
  4. If blood soaks through, add layers; do not remove the first.
  5. If bleeding is on a limb and uncontrolled, apply a tourniquet high and tight; note the time.

BOILING TIMES BY ALTITUDE

AltitudeRolling boil
Sea level – 1,000 m1 min
1,000 – 2,000 m3 min
Above 2,000 m3 min minimum

NOTE: Boiling kills pathogens; it does not remove chemical contamination.

OHM'S LAW

Voltage (V) = Current (I) × Resistance (R).

To find current: I = V / R. To find resistance: R = V / I.

Example: a 12 V battery across a 6 Ω load draws 2 A.

USE: size wires, fuses, and loads safely.
